BMT staat voor Biomedische Technologie en is een verzamelterm van nieuwe ontwikkelingen in zowel de biomedische wetenschap als in de technologie. Het slaat dus op de raakgebieden tussen beide disciplines. Biomedische technologie heeft daarom raakvlakken met verschillende technische disciplines, zoals natuurkunde, werktuigbouwkunde, scheikunde, elektrotechniek, informatica, fysiologie en biologie. In sommige opzichten is het menselijk lichaam te vergelijken met een machine, soms zelfs een zeer geavanceerde: het lichaam herstelt zich en past zich aan aan de omstandigheden.
